Snagit alternative

The Snagit alternative that doesn't bill you every year

Snagit went subscription-only in 2025. If you mostly capture and mark up screenshots, you are paying $39 a year for features you never open.

Short answer

Scrannotate is a fast screenshot and annotation tool for Mac and Windows that costs $14.99 once, with free updates. It covers capture, arrows, boxes, text, highlights and blur, and does not upload screenshots. It does not record video, so if you need screen recording, Snagit is still the better fit.

Why people are leaving Snagit

Snagit is a capable tool. For years you could buy it once and keep it. In February 2025 TechSmith moved Snagit to annual subscriptions only. An individual plan is now $39 a year and a business seat is $48 a year, with access governed by the subscription terms. Older perpetual licenses are a separate purchase model.

For people who mostly grab a screenshot, add an arrow or blur something, and paste it into a ticket or chat, that is a lot to pay every year for features they never open: video recording, templates, a cloud library and sharing tools.

What you keep, what you give up

You keep the core of what most people use Snagit for: region, window and full-screen capture, arrows, boxes, ellipses, lines, text, numbered markers, highlights, pen and blur. Every mark stays editable, you can select several and change them at once, and you get full undo and redo.

You give up screen recording, video editing, templates and cloud sharing. If you record videos or rely on Snagit's sharing links, Snagit is still the better fit, and we would rather tell you that now.

You gain speed and simplicity. Scrannotate opens from your capture hotkey, every tool is one key away, and Scrannotate does not upload your screenshots.
